Army JROTC has a well-defined structure of organization. Each person in the unit has an individual job that is part of a larger task, which is part of a much larger mission.  Part of understanding those jobs and positions is determined by rank.  LET2 and above cadets are required to stand a promotion board each year which determines rank and position for the coming year.
